A Message from Dr. Lumeng

A Message from Julie Lumeng, M.D., Associate Dean for Research, Medical School; Associate Vice President for Research-Clinical and Human Subjects Research, University of Michigan

May 21, 2024

Dear Colleagues
I am thrilled to announce that Amy Filbrun, M.D., has accepted the position as the new Co-Chair of IRBMED Boards A1 and B2.

As one of the three Co-Chairs overseeing all Human Subjects research studies under the oversight of IRBMED, Dr. Filbrun will help lead the IRBMED Office and IRBMED researchers in upholding ethical standards in human subjects research by providing mentorship to the research community, guidance to the board members and staff, and expertise in developing IRB policies and practices.

Dr. Filbrun is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics within the division of Pediatric Pulmonology. She also serves as the Medical Director of the Pediatric Pulmonary Function Laboratory and the Pediatric Home Ventilator Program and serves as the Associate Director of the Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Center. Dr. Filbrun’s research interests include long-term outcomes in children with chronic respiratory failure, ventilator dependence and clinical trials in cystic fibrosis. With 14 years of experience as an IRBMED Board member and eight years as Vice-Chair of A1, Dr. Filbrun brings a wealth of knowledge to her new role.

As we now move forward, I am seeking nominations for the position of IRBMED Vice-Chair for the A1 Board. This position helps support the IRBMED Co-Chairs and the IRBMED Office. The ideal candidate should be a member of the University of Michigan faculty, possessing the necessary training and background to qualify as a scientist member of IRBMED. They should have expertise in IRB review and board operations, a keen scholarly interest in human participant protections and ethical issues, and a strong understanding of relevant regulations. Previous experience on an IRB is essential. Candidates should also have expertise aligned with the research studies reviewed by the A1 Board.

Vice-Chairs serve three-year terms, renewable based on performance and mutual agreement. This role requires 15% effort. The Medical School will provide support in the form of effort coverage and an administrative differential.

Please send nominations by June 19, 2024, to Judy Birk (IRB Executive Director) via email ([email protected]). For self-nominations, include your CV and a letter of interest. For nominations of others, provide a supportive letter outlining the individual's qualifications.

Best regards,
Julie Lumeng, M.D.
