The ROMS Fellowship accelerates and strengthens U-M's motto as Leaders and Best by creating novel and forward-thinking opportunities for Ph.D. graduates, and your department can leverage fellowship participation in your recruiting and marketing efforts.
If you’re interested in working with a fellow, opportunities exist to participate in two general capacities:
- Elective Rotations: An immersive option that integrates a fellow into one unit, combining shadowing, experiential learning opportunities, and project work. The goal of elective rotations is to allow fellows to focus in a single area and gain a broad understanding of the responsibilities of and activities taking place within a unit. Elective rotations can last anywhere from one week to several months depending on the preferences of both the fellow and the host unit.
- Impact Project(s): During the second year of the program, fellows begin compiling a portfolio of impact projects across several units or departments. Instead of immersing in a single unit, fellows participate in project work with several groups, ranging anywhere from a couple of months in length to a year.

- Benchmark and conduct feasibility assessment for Master's Degree program. (Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine)
- Develop an engaged mentoring workshop for faculty. (Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies)
- Operationalize a generative AI interface to provide informational and resource support for 1st-year graduate students (Neuroscience Graduate Program)
- Promote scholarships from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan for doctoral students. (Office of Development)
- Craft a web-based tool for onboarding new research administrators (Grant Services & Analysis)
- Create a workshop to enhance Team Science engagement. (MICHR)

- Create utilization and performance dashboard for services. (Data Office)

Units or departments can CLICK HERE to submit ideas for a project. Proposals are accepted on a rolling basis. After reviewing proposals, fellows will work with units of interest to further define scope and timing of projects.
The UMMS Office of Research can work with each host unit to meet the following expectations for participation in the program:
- Designate a mentor to interact with the fellow and report to the UMMS Office of Research.
- Identify a project and/or desired objectives appropriate for a Ph.D. trained fellow.
- Report progress throughout the rotation or project.
- At conclusion, evaluate the fellow’s performance based on the outlined objectives.
