The Weil Product Commercialization team leverages proven methodologies to help navigate your commercially viable product through the university and into the marketplace.
Whether you’re forming your own entity or licensing to an industry partner, we have a process that will help you meet your goals.
In the past 5 years, our proven methodologies have helped license more than 20 products into the marketplace and guided investigators to spin-off 7 start-up companies.
We proactively work with the UM Office of Innovation Partnerships. While they will complete the difficult process of licensing and negotiation, we’ll ensure you’re in the best position for success, preparing you for the work that comes between first filing an invention disclosure and ultimately getting your product licensed.
"It started on the back of a napkin—an idea to bring EVDs out of the dark ages. The Weil Institute helped me secure funding through Grand Challenges. Their Commercialization team connected me with a trusted partner for prototyping. Their marketing team produced sell sheets— and a product demo! They provided me with the support I needed to prepare my product for licensing."

Defining a Path to Commercialization
One of our key goals at the Weil Institute is to help our members get innovative and impactful innovations to the bedside as quickly as possible. Commercially viable solutions to problems in Critical Care can take several forms. Our Commercialization Coaches are experienced entrepreneurs who have successfully navigated the challenging waters of taking an idea into the marketplace. They work closely with our members to help license innovations to established industry partners or to newly formed start-ups. We even help our members create new start-ups for their innovations.
Our Commercialization Coaches can also assist in finding additional funding resources to move your project farther down the path to proving commercial viability. We are a conduit to internal funding opportunities such as the Medical School’s Fast Forward Medical Innovation (FFMI), Michigan Translational Research and Commercialization (MTRAC) program, the University of Michigan’s Coulter Partnership, Weil’s own innovation programs such as the Massey TBI Grand Challenge, as well as external funding sources and business partnerships. We aggressively and proactively work closely with the University of Michigan’s Innovation Partnerships including its Venture Center to create entrepreneurial opportunities at all stages of technology development.
Other commercialization services include:
- evaluating business opportunities by assisting in customer discovery and value proposition creation;
- working collaboratively with the University’s Innovation Partnerships to evaluate intellectual property potential;
- flushing out key areas of the Mission Model Canvas or Business Model Canvas;
- connecting members to key resources inside and outside the University; and
- providing project planning and management skills to successfully position your development for commercial success.
