Improving Health Outcomes for Patients and their Families

We conduct research studies, consult and collaborate with other clinicians and researchers, and provide education to scientific and patient communities.

Mission

To achieve excellence in measurement development, selection, and application to improve clinical health research and care.

Vision

Measurement excellence in service of improving health-related quality of life.

RESEARCH

Our research focuses specifically on development of patient-reported outcomes measures (PROs) and the innovative application of PROs in research studies and clinical trials. The PROs, or self-report measures, we develop and use in our research assess health-related quality of life. Most of the PROs were developed as computer adaptive tests, or smart tests, which customize the questions that are given based on the patient's previous response. This allows the measure to be short but comprehensive.

Our application work involves using  PROs in research studies and clinical trials. This work includes using mobile devices (like a Fitbit® or a blood pressure cuff), in combination with PROs, to capture symptoms and functioning in real-time in the home enviroment. Our more recent work involves using the data collected in real-time (mood, steps, sleep) to inform a behavioral self-management intervention (just-in-time adaptive intervention), where the participant receives messages via an app that are specifically tailored to them.

CONSULTATION

CODA works closely with our collaborators to select the best outcome measures for use in clinical, research, and quality initiatives. We also partner with clinical experts and organizations to develop new outcome measures.

EDUCATION

CODA faculty provide formal and informal mentorship to students, fellows and junior faculty. In addition, we present locally, nationally and internationally on our research and on special topics including patient-reported outcome (PRO) measurement development (highlighting both qualitative and quantitative methods), PRO application in clinical research and clinical trials, and the use of the NIH Toolbox in clinical populations. We also share our work with community partners, advocacy groups and the patient populations that are the focus of our studies.
